Some Notes About My Life and Work

I have been performing original as well as traditional Jewish music since1973.  Many of my songs draw their inspiration from the Psalms , the Prophets, the Song of Songs, the Jewish mystical tradition, and my daily prayer practice.  The majority of them focus on the themes of peace, reconciliation, and healing.

My performances are usually  a blend of songs and Hassidic tales , as well as stories which arise out of my own personal life experiences.  Many of these songs are a weave of sacred Hebrew texts and my own poetry and poetic translations.  I encourage audience participation in order to facilitate an uplifting group experience.  I also seek to create an experience of joy, aliveness, and connectedness to Judaism and, ultimately, God willing, to the Sacred beyond any label or denomination.

In 1977, I entered into a process of rabbinical studies with my beloved mentor Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.  I received rabbinical ordination from him in 1985 .  Also in 1985, I helped to create Havurat Shir Hadash (Ashland, Oregon), of which I served as spiritual leader until July 1996.  In January 1993, I helped to create P'nai Or of Portland (Oregon), which I now continue to serve.

Since 1977, I have traveled throughout North America and Europe, giving concert performances and facilitating workshops on various aspects of Jewish spirituality.

I was profoundly affected by a series of concerts I gave in Germany in the summer of 1992. Fortunately, one of them was recorded live and was made into a cassette tape entitled "Let the Healing Begin." Two other tapes - "As the Deer Yearns" and "Wings of Peace" — are available, as well, for purchase.

Currently (summer 2002) I make my home in Portland, Oregon , with my wife Beth and my ten-year-old son Aviel and two recent arrivals, twin boys Dov & Elisha .  I also am blessed with two other sons, Jonathan and Isaiah , both in their late twenties.
